Do I need my own motorcycle?
Yes, Dirt Drifters does not currently have rental motorcycles and we do not currently have any rental partners in the local area.
What kind of motorcycle is suitable?
Our rides are designed for adventure and dual sport motorcycles. We highly recommend a bike with a skid plate on the bottom as loose rock and gravel is very common. We recommend at least 50/50 on road / off road tires. We also recommend at least 150+ mile fuel range; this can be the bike alone or with supplemental fuel. We frequently ride where lower fuel ranges would result in having to divert for gas stops. The 150+ mile fuel range allows us to maximize the amount of dirt road riding time.
Does my motorcycle need to be street legal?
Yes, we ride on all public roads. Your bike needs to be street legal with current registration and insurance.
Do I need a motorcycle license?
Yes, we ride on all public roads and Texas requires a motorcycle endorsement for state residents.
Why is a helmet, boots, gloves and armor required?
We are on country back roads where cattle, wild animals, complacent ranchers and even the occasional UPS driver are potential threats. Road conditions are always changing as well. While we understand and respect everyone has the right to make their own adult decisions, we want to ensure that should a misfortune occur, our riders are protected to have to best chance of minimal injury. Therefore we require that everyone on a Dirt Drifters ride wear at least the minimum basics of:
-
full face helmet or full helmet and goggles (our preference is full dirt style with goggles for dust protection on the eyes)
-
riding gloves
-
riding boots (ADV style boots are the minimum protection allowed, no street riding boots, shoes, hiking boots, etc.)
-
armor - shoulders, elbows, knees and abrasion
What else do I need?
-
Water (bring 1-2 liters minimum, a hydration pack is easiest to stay hydrated with on the go)
-
Snacks and other personal incidentals
-
Drivers license with motorcycle endorsement, motorcycle insurance and registration
-
Copy of any medical information that may be needed in the event of a medical emergency
-
Motorcycle with tire puncture repair equipment and motorcycle specific trailside repair tools
What happens if I have mechanical problems?
We will help with what we can. We are proficient in trailside maintenance like basic adjustments, flat repairs and such. However, if you have larger mechanical issues that require a tow, that is your responsibility. We will do what we can to assist and make sure everything gets taken care of in the best manner possible.
Please have the basics with you and on the bike going into the ride. Tools specific to the bike and tire repair kits (i.e. plugs or spare tubes) are often overlooked but very important to have. A PDF owner’s manual and even a PDF maintenance manual loaded on to your phone is always great for easy reference, especially in areas we may not have good cellular coverage. We have traveled tens of thousands of miles and ultimately, the only show stopping issues we have seen were all things that could have been prevented with standard preventative maintenance. Please do due diligence and ensure your bike is fully maintained and prepped prior to the ride.
What if there is an accident or medical emergency?
We are first aid and CPR certified and will work diligently, in good faith, to stabilize the situation as required. We carry satellite communications with SOS so even in the event that cellular service does not exist, we can still request assistance and communicate with emergency services. We do suggest that an individual first aid kit be a standard part of one’s gear.
